How can an optometrist best use technology to improve eye care?

1.  Who do you plan to interview?  What is this person's area of expertise?

I plan to interview my mentor, Dr. Wong. His area of expertise is optometry.

2.  Verify that you have called your interviewee to schedule an interview.  What is the date and time of the interview?

My mentor has state he is free on either Tuesday or Thursday for my interview; however I have not clarified a date and time yet.  

3.  Phrase an open-ended question that will help you find research resources that would help to answer the EQ.

What type of technology is out there for optometry practices?

Blog 13: 10 Hour Mentorship Check-In

1.   Where are you doing your mentorship?

I am doing my mentorship at Golden Optometric Group.

2.   Who is your contact?  What makes this person an expert?

My contact is Andrew Wong. Dr. Wong is an Optometrist, who has been in his line of work for 10 years, has graduated from UC Berkeley Optometry School and has also taught before at the Optometry School at UC Berkeley.

3.   How many hours have you done during the school year? (Summer Mentorship Hours and Mentorship Hours should be reflected separately in your Senior Project Hours log located on the right hand side of your blog).

I have done 15 ½ mentorship hours so far during the school year.

4.   Succinctly summarize what you did, how well you and your mentor worked together, and how you plan to complete the remaining hours.

During my mentorship hours I have been shadowing my mentor while he works and I have shadowed some Opticians as well. My mentor and I have been working well together towards my mentorship. I plan to complete my remaining hours by shadowing him and other Opticians some more.

Blog 12: Holiday Project Update

1.  It is important to consistently work on your senior project, whether it is break or we are in school.  What did you do over the break with your senior project?

I worked on my notes in my senior project notebook and thought of some ideas for activities.

2.  What was the most important thing you learned from what you did, and why?  What was the source of what you learned?

I learned many things from my research and notes, when I was working on my notebook. The most important thing I learned was how much technology is involved in the process of optometry.

3.  Your third interview will be a 10 question interview related to possible answers for your EQ. Who do you plan to talk to and why?

I plan to talk to my mentor for my third interview concerning possible answers for my EQ.

Blog 11: Lesson 1 Reflection

1. What are you most proud of in your lesson, and why?

The thing I am most proud of in my presentation is that I actually got through my presentation even though I was so nervous, because I was afraid I was going to freeze or start stuttering in the middle of my presentation, so I am glad it didn’t turn out as worse as it could’ve.

2. What assessment would you give yourself on your lesson? Explain why you earned that grade using evidence from the component contract.

I think I deserved an AP on my presentation, because I know I did not present all the criteria required of me and there were some flaws in how I presented; however I did present and presented most of the information required of me.

3. If you could go back, what would you change about your lesson?  How can you use that knowledge to give a better Lesson 2?

If I could go back I would change many things I did in Lesson 1. I would review and prepare more on my presentation. Also, I would make more eye contact with the audience and not read off the paper as much as I had during my presentation, I used my paper as a safety precaution and was too dependent on it. I think the knowledge of knowing my mistakes in Lesson 1 will help me correct and learn from my mistaks to avoid them in Lesson 2 in the future.

Blog 10 - Interview 2 Reflection

1. Please explain how you are spending your mentorship time (Is it at a workplace or somewhere else?  Are you shadowing?  Are you able to do tasks that are meaningfully related to the topic?  If so, what?  Are there other people who are experts in the location?  Etc...)

I am spending my mentorship time by shadowing my mentor at an Optometry clinic.  I am able to see how an Optometrist works and learn more about the eye anatomy and functions.  My mentor answers any questions I may have related towards my topic on optometry during waiting periods for the next patient.  

2.  How did you find your mentor?  How did you convince this person to help you?  

I found my mentor by calling the nearest optometrist clinic near me, the receptionist informed me I would need to email Dr. Wong if he would be willing to mentor me and gave me his email address. I then emailed Dr. Wong saying if he would be my mentor for a senior project I was doing for my high school, he responded to my email agreeing to become my mentor.

3. How would you rate your comfort level with your mentor at this point in your relationship?  How does this relate to the time you've spent so far at mentorship/with this person

I would rate my comfort level  with my mentor as a 5, from a rating of  1 to 10. It has been okay so far. However, I think this does relate to the time I spent there, since I have not been mentoring for very long.

4. What went well in this interview?  Why do you think so?  What do you still need to improve?  How do you know?  How will you go about it?

I think the background information I gained on my mentor went well as well as the interview overall because of the knowledge I obtained on the qualifications my mentor has. I need to improve on my communication skills and the questions I ask my mentor.  I know that I may stutter at times, speak low, and not speak clear enough, and my questions need to be clearer.  I think that I will improve on my communication, speaking, and presenting skills as the project proceeds and my mentorship continues.

Blog 9 - Advisory Prep 3

1. State whether or not you currently have a mentor, and what the status of your interview is with that person (I have completed the interview, I have scheduled the interview, I have not scheduled the interview, etc).

Yes, I currently have a mentor, I have scheduled the interview with my mentor.

2. At this point, your research is probably guiding your studies toward more specific areas within your topic.  Name the area or two you find most promising and explain your reasons.   

At this point my research is guiding me towards the area of the anatomy of the eye and the connection the eye has with the brain. The area I find most promising is the diseases in the eye and the eye and brain communication.

3. What kinds of sources do you think will help you in the next month to gain more research depth?  Where will you go to get them?

The kinds of  sources I think will help me in the next month to gain more research depth will  be books based on and  describing the eyes and vision perception.

4. Write down a possible EQ.  Please don't worry about wording other than ensuring that it provides the option for multiple correct answers.  At this point, the senior team is most interested in understanding your thought process.

2.  Discuss how or what you will do to meet the expectation of showing 30 hours of evidence.

Video tape or blog how many hours I did a day and what I did in those hours.

3.  Explain how what you will be doing will help you explore your topic in more depth.

I will learn more of the structure of the eye.
